Getting started
Section 1 of 12
Everything in ButtarAI starts with a free account. Your account gives you access to the dashboard where you create chatbots, add knowledge, and manage your subscription.
Create your account
Go to the
/signuppage and enter your name, email address, and a password (minimum 8 characters). Your free trial starts immediately — no credit card required.Confirm your email
Check your inbox for a confirmation email and click the verification link. If you do not see it within a few minutes, check your spam folder.
Log in to your dashboard
Visit the
/loginpage and sign in with your email and password. You will land on your dashboard overview, ready to create your first chatbot.
Tip
Use your work email when signing up — it makes subscription and billing conversations much easier later.
Free trial
Every new account includes a 15-day free trial with full access to chatbot creation, website crawling, and the knowledge base.
Creating your first chatbot
Section 2 of 12
Each chatbot is an independent AI assistant with its own knowledge, branding, and embed code. Most users create one chatbot per website.
Open the dashboard
Log in and go to the Chatbots page from the sidebar.
Click “New chatbot”
Select the New chatbot card to open the creation form.
Name your chatbot
Give it a clear name, for example
Acme Support Bot. Visitors will see this name in the chat header.Add your website URL (optional)
Paste your website address, for example
https://example.com. You can crawl it for knowledge right away, or skip this and add FAQs manually later.Create and configure
Click Create. Your chatbot is now live in the dashboard with a unique public ID — you will use it when installing the widget.
Choose the name carefully
The chatbot name is visible to your website visitors in the chat header. You can change it later in the Overview tab, but pick something professional from the start.
Customizing your chatbot
Section 3 of 12
Open your chatbot and go to the Overview tab to adjust how it looks and behaves. Changes save instantly and apply to the live widget.
- Chatbot name
- Shown in the chat header. Keep it short and recognizable.
- Welcome message
- The first message visitors see when they open the chat. Greet them and suggest what they can ask.
- Primary color
- Your brand color, used for the chat button, header, and user message bubbles. Use the color picker or paste a hex code.
- Fallback message
- Shown when the chatbot cannot find an answer in your knowledge base. Example: “I’m not sure about that — please contact us at support@example.com.”
- System prompt
- Advanced: extra instructions for the AI, such as tone of voice or language. Leave blank to use the default.
- Status
- Set to Paused to temporarily disable the chatbot without deleting it.
Tip
Write your welcome message as a helpful invitation, for example: “Hi! I can answer questions about our products, pricing, and delivery. What would you like to know?”
Uploading your chatbot logo
Section 4 of 12
A custom logo makes the chatbot feel like a native part of your website. Upload it from your chatbot's Overview tab, in the branding section.
Recommended specifications
- Format
- PNG with transparent background works best. JPG is also accepted.
- Size
- Square image, at least 256 × 256 pixels. 512 × 512 is ideal.
- File size
- Keep it under 512 KB so the widget loads fast.
- Style
- Simple, high-contrast marks read best at small sizes.
What happens if you skip the upload
ButtarAI never leaves your chatbot with a broken or empty image. If you do not upload a logo, the chatbot automatically falls back to your project logo — and if none is available, to a clean default AI avatar.
Tip
Test how the logo looks on both light and dark website backgrounds before going live — thin or light-colored logos can disappear on white pages.
Chatbot position
Section 5 of 12
The chat widget appears as a floating circular button in the corner of your website. You can choose which corner it lives in.
- Bottom right (default)
- The standard placement. Works well for most layouts and keeps the button clear of left-side navigation menus.
- Bottom left
- Use this if your site already has a floating element on the right — for example a cookie banner, back-to-top button, or another widget.
Changing the position
Open chatbot settings
Go to your chatbot's Overview tab in the dashboard.
Choose the widget position
Select Bottom right or Bottom left. A small visual preview shows where the button will sit.
Save
The change applies to your live website immediately — no need to re-paste the embed code.
Mobile note
On small screens the chat panel opens full-width regardless of the corner you choose, so the conversation stays easy to read.
Knowledge base
Section 6 of 12
The knowledge base is the brain of your chatbot — everything it knows about your business lives here. Open the Knowledge tab of your chatbot to manage it.
Adding content
Add an FAQ
Click Add FAQ, write the question exactly as a visitor would ask it, then write a complete, accurate answer.
Add custom text
Click Add text to paste longer content — product descriptions, policies, price lists, or contact details.
Wait for processing
New entries are processed automatically. Once the status shows ready, the chatbot can answer questions about them.
Managing entries
Every entry shows its type, title, and status. You can search entries by keyword, edit them to keep information up to date, or delete anything outdated. Deleted entries are removed from the chatbot's memory immediately.
How the chatbot uses your content
In plain terms: your content is split into small passages and converted into a searchable format. When a visitor asks a question, ButtarAI finds the most relevant passages and the AI writes its answer using only that content. If nothing relevant is found, it replies with your fallback message instead of guessing.
Tip
Write FAQs in your customers' own words. If visitors ask “How long does delivery take?”, use that exact phrasing as the question — it dramatically improves answer quality.
Website crawling
Section 7 of 12
Instead of copying content by hand, paste your website URL and let ButtarAI crawl your public pages automatically.
Open the Knowledge tab
Select your chatbot, then open the Knowledge tab.
Enter your website URL
Paste your homepage address, for example
https://example.com, and click Crawl website.Wait for the crawl to finish
A small loader shows
Crawling website…while pages are being read. Crawling up to 15 pages usually takes under a minute.Review the results
Each crawled page appears as a knowledge entry. Check that the page count looks right, then test your chatbot.
What gets crawled
The crawler follows links on the same domain as your starting URL and reads public pages only — no login-protected areas, and no external websites.
Entry statuses
- pending
- Queued and waiting to be processed.
- processing
- Currently being crawled and converted. Please wait.
- ready
- Finished. The content is live in your chatbot.
- failed
- Something went wrong. Check the error message and the troubleshooting tips below.
If crawling fails
Make sure the URL is public (not behind a login), returns readable HTML (not a blank JavaScript app shell), and is not blocking bots in robots.txt. Try crawling a specific page URL instead of just the homepage.
Real status, no fake progress
The loader reflects the actual crawl state from the server. If a crawl takes longer than a few minutes, check the entry status — do not start a second crawl of the same URL.
Installing on your website
Section 8 of 12
Installation is a single script tag. Open your chatbot's Install tab to find your unique snippet — it contains your chatbot's public ID.
<script
src="https://YOUR-DOMAIN.com/widget.js"
data-bot-id="YOUR_PUBLIC_BOT_ID"
async
></script>Your snippet is unique
Replace YOUR-DOMAIN.com with your ButtarAI domain and YOUR_PUBLIC_BOT_ID with the ID shown in your Install tab. Never share another chatbot's snippet — each one is tied to a single bot.
Framework guides
Paste the snippet just before the closing </body> tag on every page where you want the chatbot to appear. No build step or plugin is required.
Tip
After installing, open your site in an incognito window and click the chat button. If it does not appear, see the Troubleshooting section below before changing anything.
Testing your chatbot
Section 9 of 12
Always test before you install. Open the Test tab of your chatbot to chat with it exactly as a visitor would.
Open the Test tab
You will see a live preview of your chat widget.
Ask real customer questions
Type the questions your visitors actually ask — about pricing, delivery, returns, contact details, and services.
Check the answers
Good answers come from your knowledge base. If an answer is wrong or generic, add the missing information as an FAQ or crawl the relevant page, then test again.
Test mode
Messages sent in the Test tab are not saved to conversation history and do not count toward your monthly usage. Test as much as you like.
Managing conversations
Section 10 of 12
Every chat on your website is saved. Open the Conversations tab to see the full list.
What you can see
- Conversation list
- All chats, newest first, with start time and message count.
- Full transcripts
- Click any conversation to read every visitor message and AI reply.
- Timestamps
- When each conversation started and when the last message was sent.
What is stored
ButtarAI stores the visitor's messages, the AI's replies, and timestamps — only what is needed to show you the conversation history. Conversations belong to your account and are never shared between customers.
Tip
Review conversations weekly. Questions the chatbot could not answer are a to-do list for your knowledge base — add them as FAQs and your bot gets smarter every week.

Troubleshooting
Section 12 of 12
Most issues fall into a few familiar categories. Work through these before contacting support.
Check these in order:
- Is the chatbot's status set to Active in the dashboard?
- Is your site's domain listed under Allowed domains (if you use domain restrictions)?
- Did you paste the correct snippet with your chatbot's public ID?
- Try disabling ad blockers — they sometimes hide chat widgets.
- Hard-refresh the page (Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + R) to clear cached scripts.
Open the Test tab and ask the same question. If the answer is poor there too, your knowledge base is missing the information — add the relevant page URL for crawling or write an FAQ covering the topic, wait for it to show as ready, and test again.
Make sure the URL is:
- Public — not behind a login or paywall.
- Returning readable HTML — not an empty JavaScript app shell.
- Not blocking crawlers in
robots.txt.
Try the exact page URL instead of just the homepage.
You have reached your plan's monthly conversation allowance. Usage resets on the first day of each month. To continue immediately, upgrade your plan or contact us about a higher allowance.
Rate limits protect your chatbot from abuse — 60 messages per minute per visitor and 300 per minute per chatbot. If legitimate traffic triggers this, contact support and we can review the limits for your account.
Most dashboard changes (name, colors, messages, position) apply instantly. If the widget itself looks outdated, hard-refresh your site — browsers cache the widget script for a few minutes.
Still stuck?
Contact support from the /contact page with your chatbot name and a description of the problem — screenshots help us resolve things faster.
Still need help?
Our support team replies within two business days. Include your chatbot name and a screenshot if something looks broken.
